You can search Manukau's journey - a Manukau timeline by browsing chronologically (in date order) or by using keywords or phrases, either on their own or in combination with dates.

Quick search searches for single words or phrases or combinations of words and phrases (keywords). Simply go to the home page and fill in the search box at the top right hand corner of the page.

Advanced search

Advanced search allows searches for words and phrases to be combined with searches for place names and/or dates and/or types of images.

Keyword search

Keyword searches cover the text of entries, sources and captions, but not text within maps or facsimile documents.

Keyword searches can be done in both quick search and advanced search.

Keyword search tips

1. Searches may include words, phrases, dates, or any combination of these.
Note: capital letters may be ignored.

2. A keyword search brings up all entries which include the exact word or phrase used:

3. When selecting keywords or phrases, omit articles and prepositions (‘a', ‘the', ‘and', ‘to', etc.) unless these form part of the exact phrase required.

4. In general, use specific words and phrases and avoid generic words such as ‘history':

5. To search for more than one word and/or phrase (AND) use an ampersand (&):

6. To search for stems of words use an asterisk (*). The asterisk can be used within one or more words in a phrase.

7. Search for alternative spellings or phrases (OR) by using a slash (/):

8. Exclude words or phrases (NOT) by using an exclamation mark (!):

9. Proximity searches: find words near one another by using w# or p#.

10. Narrow complex searches down by using parentheses ( ) to create groups of words or phrases that you wish to search together. This makes sense when combining OR (/) with AND (&) or NOT (!) searches. Note: that the order of search takes place from left to right but search instructions within parentheses are undertaken before search instructions outside parentheses.
