The Manukau Task Force is established to advise on environmental matters relating to the Manukau Harbour. The task force, which includes representatives of the Crown, regional and local bodies, the Tangata Whenua, and environmental groups, recommends that the Auckland Regional Council establish a dedicated Manukau Committee, that a Manukau Guardians Group is set up, and that Kaitiaki is recognized for the Manukau (see also 2 March 1993).

Representatives of Ngati Te Awa begin picketing the NZ Steel iron-sand mine site at Maioro because of concerns over the safety of waahi tapu sites within the mining area. The picket lasts until May. The sites are gazetted for conservation purposes on 25 July 1990 and protocols are later established for the identification and protection of these and other waahi tapu sites (see also 24 May 2005).

The Waiuku post office building is burnt down in what is suspected as an arson attack. A new post shop is opened on 8 July 1991.

The Pavilion of New Zealand, originally set up as a show-piece at Brisbane's 1988 Commonwealth Games Expo, is opened on a new site at the Lakeside Convention Centre in Mangere. The Pavilion is closed towards the end of 1996 because of falling visitor numbers.

An exhibition of Pacific Island women's craft is held at Manukau Polytechnic. This is the first 1990 event held in Manukau City, although the first officially registered event is a 'Polynesian Spectacular' which begins at Hillary College the following day, followed by the launch of the 17th Commonwealth Quilt Exhibition at the Fisher Gallery, Pakuranga on 19th January. Celebrations continue with dozens of further events during the year, including exhibitions, festivals, dance and drama, book launches and sporting competitions.

The XIVth Commonwealth Games begin. Track cycling events are held in the newly built velodrome at the Manukau Sports Bowl, Clover Park, Manukau City; bowling events are held at Highland Park; and a number of shooting events are held at the Ardmore shooting range.

The Firth of Thames Ramsar Site is established (i.e. nominated for inclusion in the List of Wetlands of International Importance). The site comprises the intertidal zone between the Waihou River and Kaiaua, including existing wildlife management reserves along the Miranda coastline (see also 29 September 1990).

The Manukau City Library's administrative offices are moved to Ronwood Avenue, Manukau City Centre, where a central reference library and reading room are also opened (see also 15 May 2002). The Manukau library system now has nine branches, a reference library, a corporate library, a mobile library and five rural libraries (see also 20 February 1995).

A Trade Aid shop is established in St George Street, Papatoetoe. A Howick shop is similarly opened in 1993. The Papatoetoe shop later closes down, but the Howick shop is moved to Botany Town Centre in 2002.
