Pakuranga College opens. This is initially housed in the buildings of the former Howick District High School, but moves to its new site in Pigeon Mountain Road on 9 May 1960 (the official opening is held on 7 October 1961). The re-established Howick Primary School remains at the old District High School site until 1964 (see also 4 February 1964).

Waiuku College opens. This is based in the Waiuku District High School's secondary department buildings in View Road until it moves to a new site in Constable Road in 1962 (see also 19 September 1964). The Waiuku Primary School, which has remained in George Street, then takes over the View Road site as well (see also 1 February 1978).

Representatives from a total of 39 Papatoetoe clubs and voluntary groups meet to found the Papatoetoe Community Service. This is intended to organize the town's Honouring of Age functions and undertake other welfare and charitable work in the town.

Manurewa's second parade of homes is opened, in Dreadon and Kay Roads. The event is symbolic of the rapid growth of the borough continuing through the early 1960s (see also 16 March 1963)

Manurewa High School's first adult education evening classes commence. Courses on offer initially include dressmaking, woodwork, typewriting, art, floral art, and a course for owner-drivers. The Auckland University Adult Education Centre organizes some of the classes, including from 1 June 1960 an art class tutored by Anthony Stones which offers pottery lessons using local clay.

The Papatoetoe Contract Bridge Club is formed. This is South Auckland's third bridge club, after Franklin (1957) and Papakura (1958).

A conference of Auckland local bodies convened by the Auckland Metropolitan Council resolves to support the establishment of a metropolitan or regional authority for Greater Auckland. This is a crucial step towards the formation of the Auckland Regional Authority (see also 1 April 1964).

Papakura Borough Council closes the Queen Street organic rubbish tip, which has long been regarded by local residents as an eyesore and a nuisance. Papakura's organic rubbish now goes instead to a privately owned tip in the Hunua Gorge (see also 30 April 1970).

A new police residence is established in Manurewa. About this time the town gets its second police constable. A third constable is appointed in September 1961, and a police sergeant in 1965.

The Papakura Pony Club is formed. The club holds its inaugural official opening day in December.

The newly formed Otara Soccer Club first takes to the field, putting up three junior teams against Manurewa and Papatoetoe in matches held at Otara Primary School. The club is active again at least for the following season (see also October 1973)

The Drury community hall is officially reopened. It has been moved from its original site on Great South Road to the Drury Domain, where it has been renovated and enlarged.

Representatives from the Papakura, Pukekohe and Waiuku and Papakura free kindergartens form the Franklin Free Kindergarten Association, responsible for an area stretching from Manurewa to Mercer.

Manukau County Council and the Howick, Manurewa and Papatoetoe borough councils establish a joint hydatids control committee. Manukau County undertakes the administration of the scheme.

The Papatoetoe Hotel is opened. This is Papatoetoe's first-ever licensed hotel, and the first licensed hotel built in the area between Otahuhu and Manurewa since the Raglan Hotel at Woodside (Wiri) had burnt down in 1876.
