The Awhitu automatic telephone exchange is opened. This allows subscribers to dial local calls direct, although toll calls must still be routed through Waiuku.

Jamesfield Ltd holds a ball in the Waiuku Town Hall to celebrate the opening of its Waiuku clothing factory. This is the first of several small clothing factories established in Waiuku in post-war years. Others include Waiuku Knitwear in 1958, Childswear Ltd in 1967, Hurley Bendon in 1970, and Le Mae Knitwear in 1978 (see also 30 November 1998).

Newly elected Prime Minister Sydney Holland makes an official visit to Pukekohe. He is the first Prime Minister to visit Franklin since George Forbes in 1932.

Manukau County Council proposes the establishment of what would be a new form of local government for New Zealand, the urban county. Under this proposal, the Urban County of Manukau would consist of Manurewa, Papatoetoe and Papakura boroughs, Howick Town District, and a number of rural ridings (see also 17 December 1962).

The Papatoetoe Amateur Theatrical Society is formed. It lasts only a season or two, although some of its functions are then taken over briefly by the Papatoetoe Community Arts Service (see also 2 May 1960).

The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research buys the buildings of the former Dilworth Agricultural School in Otara Road. These become the headquarters of the New Zealand Fertilizer Manufacturers' Research Association, with space also allocated to the Crop Research and Plant Diseases Division. (In 1987 the buildings are absorbed into the Manukau Institute of Technology campus.)

About this time, a new road to the west coast of the Manukau Peninsula is opened at Hamilton's Gap. It has largely been developed and paid for by the Pollok Ratepayers' Association (see also 22 November 2005).

The Franklin Boat Club is formed at a meeting held in Waiuku. A gala day for both yachts and power boats is held at Glenbrook Beach on 19 March 1950. In 1953 the yachtsmen form their own club (see 12 November 1953).

The Manurewa Country Girls' Club is formed. This is the first country girls' club established in the Auckland area. By the time the South Auckland Country Girls' Clubs District is established in 1960, East Tamaki, Upper Franklin, Patumahoe and Waiuku clubs have also been set up; and soon afterwards another club at Karaka.

Representatives of Manukau City Council and the East Tamaki war memorial committee meet with the Minister of Internal Affairs to discuss a proposed East Tamaki Second World War memorial. The ambitious plans for the East Tamaki recreation reserve include a memorial gateway, a garden of remembrance, a new hall, and new sports pavilions and playing fields. The plans are subsequently scaled down, although the playing fields are extended, a bowling pavilion is opened in 1953, a croquet pavilion in 1955, and memorial gates completed in September 1955 (see also 12 December 1967).

The St John Ambulance South Suburban Corps holds its first annual cadets competition. Teams taking part come from the Manurewa, Wesley College, Mangere East, and Otahuhu Cadet Ambulance Divisions and the Otahuhu Cadet Nursing Division.

Papatoetoe Borough takes over a total of 446 acres of partly-urbanised land on its northern, eastern and southern fringes from Manukau County, although it loses 156 acres of farmland to the west (see also 1 October 1959).

The Manukau Tribal District is proclaimed. This includes portions of Papatoetoe Borough and Manukau County, as well as Pukekohe Borough, Waiuku Town District and the western parts of Franklin County. It is divided into the Tamaki-Makaurau, Rere-o-te-Whioi, Tahuna and Pukekohe tribal committee areas. At the same time the existing Waitemata Tribal District is extended to include part of Mangere and Favona (see also 27 September 1960).

About this time, Pidgeon's timber mill is established near the intersection of the Pakuranga-Howick highway and the Bucklands Beach road. This is the first industrial enterprise to set up in the hitherto rural area (see also 19 March 1956).
