Captain Alexander Duthie builds a two-storey house on a site above the Orere River at Orere Point. (The house is relocated across the river in the 1960s, then removed to Whenuapai in 1990.)

William Ferguson Massey buys a large homestead, built by the timber merchant Daniel Lynch about 1852-53, and 17 acres of land in Mangere East. Massey calls the house 'Franklynne'. The house remains in the Massey family until 1976 (see also 20 September 1980).

The boundaries of the Manukau electorate are redrawn, and now include South Auckland as far as Papakura. The Franklin electorate covers the remainder of South Auckland as far as the Waikato River.

The first school at Mangere Bridge is opened, children in the area previously having attended the Onehunga School. At first a rented cottage is used for lessons, but a school building is erected in 1891.

A Methodist church is dedicated at Paparata. After many years of service, the church burns down in February 1954 and is replaced by a relocatable building.

A Farmers' Defence Association is formed in Papatoetoe in protest against increases in local farriers' charges. It resolves to give members' business to non-union blacksmiths only.

A fifteen-acre cemetery reserve is established at Mangere. On 24 October 1890 trustees are appointed to manage it. These include some well-known Mangere names: James Robertson (then chairman of the Mangare [sic] Road Board), Mathew Middlewood Kirkbride, Joseph Ambury, Charles Washer, and William Ferguson Massey.

In response to a request from the Mangere Road Board, a total of 107 acres of former confiscated lands are set aside in Mangere for water, quarrying, and recreational purposes, including Mangere Mountain and other areas nearby, and 15 acres for a cemetery. On 29 October 1890 the 95-acre Mangere Hill Recreation-ground is declared a public domain, and the Mangere Domain Board is formed to administer it. The quarry and water reserves are vested in the Mangere Road Board (see also December 1966).

A school is opened in a shed on what is now Seagrove Road, Waiau Pa. This is Waiau Pa's first school. In 1900 and again in 1915 the school is relocated to a more central position in the community.

The newly formed Otahuhu Trotting Club holds its inaugural meeting. The club develops its training facilities at Takanini, but holds its race meetings at Potter's Paddock, later renamed Alexandra Park (see also 29 August 1919).

A post office is established at Alfriston in the local general store. (The post office is closed on 31 December 1932.)

A cemetery reserve is gazetted at Hudsons Beach, near Awhitu. Only one person is ever buried there, and the reserve is gazetted as a recreational reserve in 1969. In 1993 Ngati Te Ata lays claim to the land.

A primary school is first opened at Weymouth. The school is based in the Anglican church from 1914 and is closed in 1946 (see also 5 September 1960).

The Papakura Valley Lawn Tennis Club is founded. This establishes courts on a succession of local farms around Brookby before building permanent courts and a pavilion in 1925 next to the war memorial in Alfriston Road. The club goes into recess about 1960 (see also 11 July 1966).

A creamery is established in Waiuku, on the site of a former cheese factory. Like other creameries later established in the vicinity at Otaua and Aka Aka, this becomes a satellite of the New Zealand Dairy Association's Pukekohe butter factory. In January 1892 the buildings are destroyed by fire - when it is rebuilt is unknown (see also 22 September 1915).

The Manukau Yacht & Open Sailing Boat Club is formed at Onehunga. On 15 April 1892 it holds its first public outing on the Manukau Harbour. In 1908 it becomes the Manukau Yacht & Motor Boat Club (see also 9 December 1911).

The Maori King, Tawhiao, receives compensation for a block of land at Mangere which, according to his claim, was left to him under the will of Te Wherowhero.
