By or before this time 'Meadowbrook' has been built by a Mr Lord in Twilight Road, Brookby. The kauri timber used to build the house has been milled and pit-sawn on the property.

The Tuakau Presbyterian church is opened in aptly-named Church Street. The church is enlarged in 1892, and later shifted to a new site in Madill Street (see also 20 November 1960).

About this time, Pakuranga's first public hall is opened. The building had served as the local school since 1871, and before that reputedly had been the former officers' quarters at the Albert Barracks. The hall burns down in 1914 (see also 13 July 1921).

The Waipipi Road Board approves a tender to construct a wharf at Waipipi. This is completed by October 1880, but has not been built to the agreed specifications, and soon has to be repaired.

The Otahuhu Domain Board is constituted to administer Otahuhu's five-acre recreation reserve. Unlike some of the other domain boards in the region, this has a relatively short life as an independent domain board, its powers being delegated to the Otahuhu Road Board on 20 October 1887.

St David's Anglican Church, Wiri, is opened. It is enlarged by the addition of an apsidal chancel in June 1887 and a vestry in 1901.

15 September 1880
The maiden voyage of the Waiuku & Onehunga Steam Navigation Company's boat 'Manukau' takes place. The Manukau operates a regular service between Waiuku and Onehunga, also calling at Awhitu and Waipipi. It later begins a fortnightly service to Whatipu and Huia (see also 19 October 1894).

A Presbyterian church is opened in Waiuku. The local Presbyterians have previously worshipped in an interdenominational Protestant chapel and schoolhouse (see also 18 September 1954).

An area of 24 acres on the southern side of Pigeon Mountain is set aside as a recreation reserve. Four acres are also set aside as a quarry reserve. Later in the year the Pakuranga Domain Board is set up to administer the new recreation-ground. Its main functions are to lease grazing rights, build fences and eradicate noxious weeds, but by or before 1908 it also develops a cricket ground (see also 26 December 1908). The Domain Board remains in existence for more than a century (see also 4 June 1981).

The Waiuku Recreation-ground is declared the Waiuku Domain. For some years the area is mostly used for rough grazing, but it later becomes the town's main cricket and athletic grounds. In 1917 a sliver of land is taken from the domain for railway purposes, but in 1921 four acres are added. The following year it is renamed the Massey Park Domain.

A post office is opened at 'Opaheke', sometimes known at the time as Maketu or Ararimu South. It is closed on 30 November 1893 (see also 1 November 1888).

A new primary school building is opened at the Mangere school. The following year a house for the teacher is built in front of the new school (see also 16 October 1964). The original or first school building is removed from the site to make way for this (see also May 2002).

John Bycrofts' newly built flour mill at Tuakau is destroyed by fire shortly before production is due to begin (it is rebuilt in the early 1890s).

A committee is formed to establish a public hall in Bombay. This takes over the old school building, which serves as the community hall until replaced in January 1909 (see also 7 November 1959).

About this time the second wooden bridge over the Wairoa River at Clevedon is completed - there is no record of an official opening ceremony. The first bridge, built about 1864, had been destroyed by a flood; the second bridge is also destroyed by a flood in 1907 (see also 15 January 1908).
